Injuries piling up for Real as season opener draws close

Raul Albiol the latest blow for Los Merengues

Raul Albiol

With the new season yet to get underway, Real Madrid are already watching their treatment table crowded up with Raul Albiol the latest addition to the injuries list after suffering a side strain to his right ankle during Real’s pre season friendly in Belgium against Standard de Liege.

Albiol becomes the third central defender to get injured after Pepe and Ezequil Garay and is likely to be out for four weeks. The Portuguese international pulled a leg muscle and is likely to be out for three weeks while the Argentine defender suffered a dislocated knee-cap and is likely to be on the sidelines for four months.

This leaves Real coach Jose Mourinho with a defensive headache. The most likely solution to this concern will be moving Sergio Ramos to the center to partner Ricardo Carvalho and having Marcelo and Alvaro Arbeloa as full-backs.

The other injured players include Kaka, out for four months, and Muhammadou Diarra who had picked a thigh injury.

Real kick off their quest for La Liga on August 29 with a trip to Ono Estadi against Mallorca.
