Newcastle agrees deal for Davide Santon

Newcastle United have agreed a £5million deal for Inter Milan full-back Davide Santon.

Manager Alan Pardew has turned to the 20-year-old Italy international, who has also been linked with Roma, after hitting a snag in negotiations over PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters. Santon’s agent Claudio Vigorelli said: ‘At this time, there is no possibility that Santon can join Roma because right now the aim is Newcastle.’

The full back can play either side and has progressed through the ranks at Inter. Holland international Pieters played in his side’s 6-1 Eredivisie demolition of Excelsior with the Magpies yet to agree a fee with his club after a lengthy pursuit. Meanwhile, Newcastle are considering signing Czech goalkeeper Petr Bolek on a season loan.

The 27-year-old from Slovakian side FK Senica also has an offer from Leyton Orient but is wanted as cover for Tim Krul and Steve Harper. Bolek will take part in a few training sessions with Newcastle before the club decide to pursue the move. Pardew is hopeful too of landing another striker, although Leon Best once again delivered for him with a matchwinning double against Fulham. However, target Modibo Maiga played in Sochaux’s 2-1 win over St Etienne after ending his self-imposed exile from the squad as he tried to force through a move to Tyneside.

Newcastle are ready to tough it out to do business at the prices they are prepared to pay, but Pardew revealed that the lack of tangible progress was frustrating. He said:, ‘I am frustrated that we haven’t got a couple of bodies in yet, and I think [managing director] Derek [Llambias] and [club secretary] Lee [Charnley] and [owner] Mike [Ashley] are frustrated as well. ‘Hopefully, we will get it over the line this week.’
