Mertesacker to undergo medical after Arsenal agree €9m fee

Arsenal have stepped up their search for a new centre-half by meeting Werder Bremen’s 9m asking price for international defender Per Mertesacker. Mertesacker will now fly to London to agree personal terms and undergo a medical.

Arsenal, also set to sign Andre Santos from Fenerbahce, are reported to have offered the German a four-year contract. Per Mertesacker last week said that he was happy with his current situation and wanted to stay at Bremen and all reports linking him with a move were rumours. But now Mertesacker’s mind is seemed to be made up on completing a move to Emirates. Arsenal were also linked with other centre-halves including Scott Dann, Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill.

Following the sales of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, and disgruntled fans starting to make noise, Arsene Wenger will now look to use the money earned and reinvest it in the club by making some marquee signings!
