Pires returns to Premier League

Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires is about to sign for Aston Villa. The 37 year old is a free agent after he was released by Villareal in the summer. Manager Gerard Houllier feels the need to add to his squad due to the growing injury list at Villa.

Robert Pires

Pires has been training with Arsenal for a couple of months and said he would relish a move to any team in the Championship which is hopeful of a promotion. But the offer from Villa might be too good to turn down.
Gary McAllister, Villa’s assistant manager, said:

Robert has been training at Arsenal. I know the boss and Arsène Wenger are very friendly and I believe he’s going to join us in the next two or three days. It’s perfect. I am sure he will arrive at the training ground in good condition. He’s a player everyone can look up to because of what he has achieved.

Arsene Wenger believes Pires can still be effective and can make an impact at Aston Villa. Talking to French newspaper L’Equipe, he said:

To me, before his knee injury, Pires was the best left sided attacking midfielder in the world. With us he was just flying. Even if he has lost the speed of his youth, he can still help at Aston Villa thanks to his knowledge of the game.
