Mancini’s over defensive approach

Manchester City’s performance in the Manchester derby has been criticized by almost every football pundit. Before the season, many people tipped them to be the title contenders and why not.It has cost them £320 million to become contenders. But do they really have the ambition and courage of becoming the Champions of England ?

Mancini started with three defensive midfielders against Man United, as usual, Yaya Toure,Gareth Barry and Nigel de Jong. Carlos Tevez was left alone up front to do the non stop running and chasing that he always does. James Milner was selected ahead of Adam Johnson because he provides a defensive shelter to the full back. Johnson is more attacking and flamboyant.
As the home team, City should have taken the initiative to go and try to win the match. But anyone who saw the match would know that it was not United who were content with a point but City. On paper City had a stronger team and United were weak due to injuries. City could have been more courageous and taken the game to United. But manager Mancini and Kolo Toure insists it was all part of their game plan and they are more concerned about getting the 4th Champions League spot rather than being the power house of Manchester.
“We know about United and when you play against the top teams the most important thing is to try not to lose,” said Toure.
“The most important thing in the Premier League is to make sure you beat the teams that you are supposed to beat.
“If you can do that and then draw against the big teams like United, then you’ll be okay. You can be up there.
“It’s a long season and this was was a difficult game but for us we’re delighted with a draw.”
Man City should have learnt a lesson from the spirited Wolves team which went to Old Trafford and almost managed to get a point. Wolves showed United are not the best team at the moment but the Italian manager would not abandon the Italian philosophy of more concentration on defense. The amount of money Sheikh Mansoor have spent, City should be looking to win every match they play.If City can beat the strongest team in the league Chelsea at Eastlands and thrash Liverpool 3-0 then why not United? They need to start taking more risks and should play someone who can share the burden of scoring goals with Carlos Tevez.
“We improved from last year because we did not concede a goal in the last minute,” Mancini said. So all City had done under Mancini for so many months was to learn not to concede a last minute goal against United.
Man City host Birmingham at Eastlands tomorrow and I guess we all can expect a bit of change in Mancini’s approach.
