Fergie blames himself for poor start to season

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he is to blame for Man United’s stuttering start to the season. He said his rotation of United’s line up had held his team back from achieving consistency.

“Perhaps I’ve changed things too much,” said Fergie.

“We’ve been changing the strike partners quite a lot this season and I have to accept responsibility for that.
“I don’t think I’ve played the same team enough to get that level of consistency. Now we have to look for more consistency in the team now. It’s time to wake up.
“We’ve had some fantastic performances this season and, married to that, some disappointment. At Everton we could have won by six or seven and ended up drawing 3-3, while at Fulham we missed a penalty with a couple of minutes to go.
“And if you look at the dropped points against West Brom, we could be six points clear. But we scored late goals against Aston Villa and Wolves, so it all balances itself out. You can analyse the whole season but the only thing that matters at the end of the season is – where are you in the league?
“We’ve had some very good performances but in the last couple of games we’ve not played well and been a bit more fortunate than some of the other teams around us who also didn’t play well – at least we took something from our games.”

United are unbeaten in the Champions League this year and are yet to concede a goal.

“In the Champions League we’ve done well.
“We’ve not lost a goal yet and hopefully that will continue against Rangers. We used our experience very well in winning away to Valencia, and in Bursaspor we controlled the match to win 3-0.
“But we should have lost by six goals at Aston Villa and somehow got a point out of it. That says a lot about the character of the players I’ve got, which is satisfying for me. At least I know I’ve got players who are prepared to do something – and did something – about that situation at Villa.
