Champions League Wednesday Review


Pedro Leon scored in stoppage time at the San Siro to earn a vital point for Real Madrid.

Marseille produced the best performance of the night against a helpless MSK Zilina,  who conceded 7 goals . Andre Pierre Gignac started the scoring for the visitors and scored 2 goals in the opening 21 minutes. Gabriel Heinze and Loic Remy made it 4-0 at halftime. Argentinian Lucho Gonzalez joined the act and scored after the restart before Gignac scored his 3rd to complete the hat trick. Gonzalez finished the scoring with his second goal in the 63rd minute.

Chelsea cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-1 win against Spartak Moscow at Stamford Bridge. Frenchman Nicolas Anelka produced a man of the match performance. He gave Chelsea the lead in the 49th minute. Didier Drogba won the penalty and scored it himself to make it 2-0 in the 62nd minute. Branislav Ivanovic scored two goals, one with a header and the other  with a neat finish in the injury time. Moscow did get a consolation goal scored by Nikita Bazhenov in the 86th minute.

Jose Mourinho had the last laugh at the San Siro as Pedro Leon scored an injury time goal to make it 2-2 in the end . Madrid opened the scoring with Higuain,who, after a neat pass from compatriot Di Maria, finished it easily.But the 2nd half belonged to Pippo Inzaghi, for whom scoring in European competitions is an old habit. He scored twice in the space of 10 minutes, although the second looked like offside.
Pedro Leon and Benzema were thrown by the Special One and the move paid off as the Spaniard scored in stoppage time to earn a vital point.

Arsenal lost their 100% record in group H- with Shakhtar ending Arsenal’s domination of the group. The in-form Theo Walcott gave Gunners the lead in the 10th minute but Shakhtar levelled in the 28th minute through an own goal from Craig Eastmond. Former Arsenal favorite Eduardo sealed the win for the Ukrainian side by scoring just before halftime. Shakhtar joins Arsenal on 9 points.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich made sure of top spot in Group E with a 4-0 win over Cluj. Gomez scored a hat trick in absence of Miroslav Klose and Ivica Olic who are out injured. Thomas Muller rounded of the win by scoring the 4th goal and taking Bayern through to the next round.
