Liverpool crisis is far from reaching to an end as they remain in the relegation zone. Now that NESV has taken over, Hodgson will be keen to spend wisely to elevate the club to match the ambitions. The club is reportedly tracking Coentrao and made the Leftback their top transfer priority for January Transfer Window. Fabio Coentrao, who plays for Portuguese side Benfica in Primeira Liga, would be a shrewd aquisition for the club’s long-term future.
Fabio Aurelio, Arbeloa, Insua, Daniel Agger and then Konchesky in summers, so far no one has been able to establish himself as a regular Leftback for the Merseyside since the departure of John Arne Riise to AS Roma. Liverpool are still experiencing a void in the left back position, with centre back Daniel Agger regularly filling in after injury to summer signing Paul Konchesky. Now the reports suggest that Liverpool are after this young prodigy, Fabio Coentrao, who is young, talented and fast. I dont regularly follow Portuguese Primeira Liga but caught the glimpse of this player in the World Cup 2010 which was quite impressive. Is he the answer to Liverpool Leftback problems? It’s too early to say but the talent and potential is certainly there. David Santon of Inter Milan and Coentrao of Benefica are probably the most talented young left backs if you ask me. But you always have to give it a second thought if you’re making a switch to a club like Liverpool especially if you consider their recent runs and past performances. The trophy drought is there and the Club is in state of instability since the departure of key players and manager, Rafa Benitez.
The 22-year-old Wingback was a World Cup team-mate of Raul Meireles, and the Liverpool summer signing could play a key part in any potential negotiations between the player and club. Reds boss Roy Hodgson is reported to have readied £30 million to spend on new players at Anfield and the Leftback position is certainly one of those areas where Liverpool are lagging behind, so Coentrao is believed to be Hodgson’s top priority in upcoming winter trasfer window.
Sources suggest that Liverpool will have to compete with the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Real Madrid for the Portugal international’s signature. The wingback’s current contract with Benfica runs until 2016, but Coentrao could leave the Lisbon giants if a club matches his €30 million release clause.
