Last night, under the watchful eye of their Arab owner Sheikh Mansur, Manchester City taught Liverpool a footballing lesson as they thrashed them 3-0, though the scoreline could have been worse for Reds.

It all started from the 9th minute, as England winger Adam Johnson was allowed all the time and space in the world to come on to his left make a run to the centre and fire a powerful shot just past the Liverpool goal. Liverpool missed Barca-bound Javier Mascherano dearly as Hudgson decided to leave him out, and with Lucas being the anchor in the midfield, Liverpool weren’t looking that pretty. In the 13th minute, Johnson was at it again, delivering a good through ball to James Milner who hit a low-cross into the middle and there was once Liverpool target Gareth Barry to place the ball into the beyond the reach of keeper Manuel Reina. Despite the open nature of the game, clear-cut chances were scarce with neither keeper seriously tested until City extended their lead on 52 minutes. Milner’s corner was directed goalwards by Micah Richards and the slightest of touches from Carlos Tevez was enough to take the ball past Reina. Liverpool were denied a route back into the game five minutes later by a combination of the post and excellent goalkeeping as, after Steven Gerrard’s shot came back off the upright, David Ngog and then Fernando Torres were denied by superb saves from Joe Hart. The third goal was made by that man again, Adam Johnson made a dazzling run before being fouled by defender Martin Skrtel in the penalty area. The referee correctly pointed to the spot and from their Carlos Tevez made no mistake sending Reina the wrong way and grabbing his brace.

City’s professional performance provided evidence of their ability to mount a title challenge this season, while a campaign of rebuilding appears to lie in store for Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson.
