Cole heads to Anfield

Liverpool have swooped to secure the services of England international Joe Cole on a four-year deal, subject to a medical. The player was released by Chelsea earlier this month, and Liverpool had been linked with him ever since. Joe Cole had been signed on a deal worth £90,000-a-week.

A statement on the club’s official website read:

“Liverpool FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Joe Cole on a four-year deal. “The England midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Reds and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.”

Joe Cole seems to be a straight replacement for Yossi Benayoun, who co-incedentally signed for Chelsea. Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham had been linked with Cole, but the bill being payed to him at Anfield was the highest and thus he signes for Merseysiders. Cole arrived in Switzerland yesterday to meet up with the team on their pre-season tour and have a medical.

Former Liverpool players believe this signing could be a start of many to come, as Liverpool try to improve on the worst season in their club’s history for the last 20 years, finishing 7th. Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes Joe Cole will embrace Anfield and become an instant Kop hero. “I think it’s fantastic news for the club,” Rush told. “Joe Cole is a wonderful player and I think he left Chelsea because he wasn’t getting a regular game. I think it’s a fantastic buy. When you look at what we’ve got attacking wise we’ve got younger lads but we needed more experience and Cole brings that. He has got time to play in a couple of games before the season starts and he can bed in and get ready for the start of the season.”

Another former player David Fairclough has said that Joe Cole is better than Yossi Benayoun and this signing could lead to Torres and Gerrard staying at the club.
