The World Cup Journey of France

France Squad

Here we Go, Aalay Aalay Aalay! Go, Go, Go, Aalay Aalay Aalay! . . . It’s over for France. They are knocked out of the World Cup which is considered to be the most disgraceful World Cup runs in the history of French Football. First the hand ball of Thierry Henry in Play-Offs, then the draw against Uruguay followed by humiliating defeat by the hands of Mexico and last but not the least, 2-1 loss to South Africa to put icing on the cake and make sure France finish last in their group. That sums up the sorry story for France as it was ought to happen.

France Dressing Room

France football team has been going through a chain of controversies in past two weeks which cost them the World Cup. First, the benching of Thierry Henry and appointment of Evra as Captain leading to the discontentment of several squad members on the decision, then Nicolas Anelka’s outburst on Raymond Domenech, his departure back to France, Evra’s confrontation with the fitness coach during training, appointment of new captain (Alou Diarra), Shuffled squad against South Africa, Red Card of Yoan Gourcuff and finally the 2-1 loss, the series of incidents made it more painful and bitter for the French side. The loss not only shattered the dreams of a million people including the French legends Zidane and Thuram, but also dented the pride and honor of the country heavily.

Match Start

After the game against South Africa, Evra apologised to the fans and confirmed he will reveal everything to them next week.

“It’s time to say sorry,” said Evra. “I apologise to the fans. My coach stopped me saying sorry yesterday. I’ll explain things in the week. The French people need to know truth and to know what happened. Team belongs to them. There’s no reason why I wasn’t on the pitch.”

Yoan Gourcuff Red Card

If you ask me, I would point at Domenech as the cause of all problems thanks to the futile strategies he always sticked to. Domenech has been underperforming since Euro and despite delivering poor results French Football Federation never considered any alternate option. His squad selection for World Cup was pointless when he dropped Samir Nasri and Karim Benzema who I thought did well enough to find a place in the final 23. Secondly, to me, benching Thierry Henry was not justified. He is still a big player with loads of experience and one should witness that France played a lot better and their combinational play was far better whenever Thierry Henry came on as a substitute. Still, if you go through the France Squad, it was tough to take and pretty strong on the paper with the likes of Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Frank Ribery, Patrice Evra, William Gallas, Eric Abidal, Florence Malouda etc who are all big names playing for big clubs having loads of experience. With this squad, the draw against Uruguay was OK but a losing to Mexico and South Africa was unacceptable which once again comes down to the strategy played by Raymond Domenech.

Last but not the least, axing Patrice Evra, Eric Abidal, Sydney Govou and playing Gignac, Cisse ahead of Henry in the most important game, when the pride of the country mattered the most, was simply unjustified. Consequently, France faced a humiliating loss to South Africa for the first time in the History of Football which marked the end of players like Thierry Henry, William Gallas, Eric Abidal, Nicolas Anelka who’ll never play the World Cup again. The World Cup proved nothing but a disappointing end for such great players who certainly deserved better.

Many mistakes to correct yet plenty of positives to look at and build up for future, Diaby looked strong in midfield, Ribery was flawless except that he got selfish on a couple of occasions due to frustation. Defense was not up to the mark and it definitely needs to improve especially after conceding 2 goals against below par South Africa. I had a gut feeling that something strange is going to happen to France before the World Cup even started and today it has happened. France will be going back empty handed with their heads down in shame.
