Neven Subotic who plays for Serbia along side Nemanja Vidic, is rated among the best young defenders in Europe. The Serbia international, has been a long-term target Manchester United and Arsenal. Italian sources say Dortmund are willing to listen to offers for Subotic starting at £25 million. The Serbian International’s future at the Bundesliga side has been put in jeopardy after two impressive seasons at the Westfalenstadion. Moreover, the Serbians glaring performance in the 1-0 win over Group D Match against Germany on Friday further ignited the interest from the Premier League giants.
Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson considers the 6ft 3in central defender as preferred candidate to replace his Serbian counterpart Nemanja Vidic, who has been widely linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Vidic has time and again expressed his desire to stay at the Old Trafford but his unsettled family may force the Serbian to move away from Manchester. Vidic is a target for top European Clubs including Manchester City, AC Milan and nevertheless Real Madrid whose newly appointed coach, Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the Serbian.
However, Borussia Dortmund’s managing director, Hans-Joachim Watzke, claims it will take a colossal bid for Manchester United to prise Neven Subotic away from the Westfalenstadion.
“If Manchester wants to have him, they have to sign over two oil fields to us, or cart over at least two big lorries tightly packed full of English banknotes…”
The player too has reiterated that he’s happy at Dortmund and is currently not looking to move away.
“It is not secret that I feel happy in Dortmund and I would still like to win something on the European stage with the team,” he said. “Therefore I am not even thinking about a transfer at the moment.”
It is believed that the player would cost Manchester United a hefty amount. However, they will have to fend off interest from the likes of Arsenal for the centre-back, who is valued at £25 million by his German employers.
Subotic, is a very imposing defender and has drawn inevitable comparisons to Vidic, but also vaunts good pace too. Subotic, who was raised in USA and represented the United States at Under-17 and Under-20 level, joined Borussia Dortmund from Mainz in 2008 for a reported fee of €4m (£3.3m) and is under contract until 2014.
As Vidic is getting increasingly unsettled at United therefore it would be great to cash in on ageing legs of Vidic and invest in the fresh blood in the form of Subotic who is just 21 years old and has height, pace and all the ingredients of a good central defender. The move will definitely benefit Manchester United and would bring joy to United fans who have been waiting for signings since Ronaldo’s departure.
